Eastman Music Co. has introduced the EAS852 52nd Street Alto Saxophone, developed with saxophonist Alex Hahn as the newest instrument in the company’s professional 52nd Street series.
The EAS852 extends design work from the ETS852 tenor saxophone, which Eastman developed with Bob Mintzer. The alto applies that construction philosophy to a smaller instrument with its own response and tonal requirements.
Hahn previously played Eastman’s EAS652 52nd Street Alto and worked with the company to refine the new instrument for professional alto players.
Design Features
The EAS852 uses rolled-style tone holes intended to increase resonance and tonal color. Its aged unlacquered-brass finish contributes to the instrument’s appearance and response.
A large bell and brazed bell construction are designed to provide additional projection, resonance and tonal complexity across the instrument’s range.
Eastman’s patented DS Mechanism is engineered for fluid key response, mechanical stability and consistent long-term performance. The company designed the mechanism for applications ranging from fast jazz passages to sustained chamber-music playing.
Dual-Neck System
Each EAS852 includes two necks: Eastman’s established S neck and a new H neck developed with Hahn. The dual-neck system allows players to adjust the instrument’s response and tonal character for different styles, repertoire and performance settings.

“When I first started playing the 52nd Street Alto, it was the first time I truly sounded like I was playing like myself,” Hahn said.
The EAS852 alto and ETS852 tenor share a centered tonal core and projected sound. Eastman positions the instruments for professional performers, conservatory students and advanced school musicians.
